Over the past years, mobile phones manufacturers have made great technological advancements. On phones designs, manufacturers have produced phones with big screens, slimmer phones, and phones with a fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone. Although one of the design challenges is to shrink the bezel incremental strides are being made. However, the edge to edge feature is becoming more sophisticated. Some companies have already announced the features they intend to add to their phones. Bezel-less phones have been the talk of smartphone technology recently. The edge to edge screen design gives the front of a phone an almost all screen look. Some of the features such as the home button have been removed to allow utilization of space and break the boundary the phone and real world. The curvature of the front and back of the phone convene at the edges forming a symmetrical shape thereby giving the user a perfect grip.
Some companies have come close to implementing bezel-free smartphones with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The Xiaomi Mi Mix is one of the phones that the ratio of screen-to-body is about 83%. In comparison, some companies like Samsung and Apple have tried with their Samsung Galaxy S8 and iPhone X with a close screen-to-body ratio of 83% and 82% respectively.
Device Screen Size
Manufacturers have the ability to create smartphones that are smaller and compact without compromising the integrity of screen size. Like for the Galaxy S8, its screen is 5.8 with bezels on the top and bottom much smaller hence the screen-to-body ratio of 83%. There is a limit to the physical size of the device, which is determined by consumers hand and pocket, solutions that increase the viewing area of the screen without overall increase of the physical devices are being made. There is the concept of foldable displays that could enable manufacturing of larger phones. Also, the foldable phone could give different designs shapes which could improve phones durability. ZTE Axon M has tried this concept though without any significant success it proves that this concept could be good to increase the size of phone display. The edge to edge design gives users an enhanced interaction.
One of the challenges that are experienced while trying to implement this trend may include poor sound. However, the benefits outweigh the challenges and the trade-off is worth it. For instance, the bezel-less phone gives a bigger screen which gives bigger space for photos and videos, text and large buttons for easy touching.
Fingerprint sensor technology
The edge to edge screens have resulted to the displacement of the fingerprint sensor to the back for some phones and complete disappearance to others such the iPhone X. Solutions have been made to put the fingerprint sensor at the front under the display. This technology has been used in Qualcomm and Synaptics. In addition, the inclusion of the Facial unlocking technology which could be usable in bezel-less design. Facial recognition is the new standard for security and Apple has made a great stride in the improvement of the existing technology into phones with biometric authentication.
Edge to edge design put into consideration the robustness of the smartphone where the screen of the phone is tough on the edge to stop shattering if the phone is accidentally dropped.
